jennifer hudson got voted out last night. not john stevens.
what does john stevens have that's so appealing to america?
coz even i admit that his performances have been mediocre. even though he's different, providing that sliver of variety to an otherwise, you could say, monotonous group of power singers, he hasn't been much good. Take wednesday's performance for example, when he sang 'mandy', he couldn't even reach that last high note and therfore had to go low. in any other idol case, the contestant would have seemingly effortlessly reached the high note, but not john stevens. and even if we dismiss the assumption that he could not reach the high note, and we truly believe for a minute that he had intentionally meant to sing the low note, his performance was still not much was it?
and how about character? how much of his character have we seen so far? he doesn't say much on stage, nor does he say very much during his mini videos. his personality is as flat as a pounded flatfish. but on the other hand, is personality as important as they say it is? JPL got voted off last week.
john stevens is not good looking. i'm thinking that nobody would argue with me on that point. when i say good looking i'm talking about the typecast popstar kind of good looking. think justin timberlake. stevens is far..far from that..but in the idol series, looks have never been important. think clay aiken, kurt neilson, guy sebastian, even ruben studdard.
yet we love him.
but maybe it is just because of the above reasons that john stevens is so lovable. maybe because he reflects that awkward, gawky kid in us, and he shows it to the world. maybe we want someone who isn't like cameron diaz or brad pitt or the rest of the perfect farts who flood hollywood. maybe we want someone a little less good looking, a little more shy, a little more real. and that is why we acknowledge john, that is why we pay more attention to the fact that he is 16 rather than paying attention to the fact that diana degarmo and jasmine trias are 17. because we acknowledge him as a kid who is trying, despite being young and despite being different.
that's why i'll be watching american idol next wednesday, and i'll be waiting eagerly for john stevens to sing again. and in the end, even though i know chances are slimmer than jim that he will win, maybe, just maybe he will take the stage as the american idol.
